Itaúna is a hub city located in the Metropolitan Necklace of the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte, just 76 km from the capital. It has a population of around 86,000 inhabitants. It is one of the most important university towns in the state.
To arrive
Coming by car: The main access to the city is via the BR81 to Betim, then take the BR 262 towards Triângulo until the junction of MG 050 in Juatuba and continue for another 30 km.
Note: At km 81, in the municipality of Itaúna, there is a toll plaza at Nascentes das Gerais that manages MG 050. The toll for a passenger vehicle currently costs R$4.00.
An alternative route free of toll fees for those coming from Belo Horizonte is to follow the BR 381 through Betim, São Joaquim de Bicas, Igarapé and enter MG 431 in Itatiaiuçu and continue another 25 km to Itaúna, but the path increases by about 26 km.
Coming by bus: The BH X Itaúna line is operated by Viação Itaúna with schedules every 30 minutes daily. Currently, the trip takes almost two hours due to stops at various locations in Contagem, Betim, Juatuba and Mateus Leme on BR 381, BR 262 and MG 050. In direct or less busy times, the trip takes about an hour and a half.
