background
According to biblical accounts, John the Baptist baptized Jesus at the Jordan (Mk 1,9-11 ). Although today it is generally assumed that the actual baptismal site was most likely further south, possibly on Jordanian Area at Bethany, many believers come here and celebrate the baptism ceremony by immersing themselves in the Jordan River and being baptized that way.
getting there
Jardenit is on Jordan near the outflow from the Sea of Galilee between the kibbutzim Degania and Kinneret, a few meters from road 90.
Tourist Attractions
The baptismal font is surrounded by a wall that reproduces the text of the baptism of Christ in numerous languages. You enter the complex through a souvenir shop, behind it is a promenade along the Jordan. You can get white baptism shirts in one of the shops. In the toilet facility (price 2 NIS) there are not only the toilets but also changing rooms and showers. Quite a few believers use the bath in the Jordan for a ritual baptism.
If you don't want to go into the water, you should still go down the stairs to the river. In it you can observe numerous large fish, probably catfish, at close range.
