Characteristic

Iasi is situated in Northeast Romania, very close to the border with The Republic of Moldovafrom which Romania is separated by the Prut River. The city is located on seven hills: Cetățuia, Galata, Copou, Bucium, Șorogari, Repedea and Breazu. They form important landmarks, and churches have been erected on several of them. When viewed from above, despite the ubiquitous buildings, Iasi is very green. They have the character of a "garden city" with parks, boulevards, gardens and groves everywhere. Unfortunately, this image of the city underwent a significant transformation during the communist times, as well as in the center, slowly developing modern architecture.

In 1641, hospodar Bazyli Lupu founded the State School here, and a printing house was established in the monastery of the Three Holy Hierarchs, which published books in Romanian. In 1686, the Polish army fought the Battle of Jassy (Polish-Turkish War 1683-1699). In the years 1859–1862 Iasi was one of the two capitals of the United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia (next to Bucharest).
