background

The area of today's capital has been around since the 4th millennium BC. Settled. Erebuni fortress and settlement has been around since 782 BC. Occupied. At the time of the Achaemenids, between the 6th and 4th centuries BC BC, Armenia became the satrapy of the Persian Empire and Yerevan its center. In 658 Yerevan was conquered by the Arabs.

Due to its strategically important location, it was repeatedly taken over by other foreign rulers: between the 9th and 11th centuries by the Bagratids, then by the Seljuks and in 1387 Timur Lenk (Tamerlan) conquered the city. In the Middle Ages, the city was a constant bone of contention between the Persians, Ottomans and Russians.

On June 7, 1679, the city was destroyed by a devastating earthquake.

The city has been under Russian rule since the beginning of the 19th century. It was captured by the tsar's troops under the leadership of Count Ivan Fyodorovich Paskewitsch on October 13, 1827. Apart from a brief independence during the turmoil of the October Revolution, Armenia belonged to Russia and the Soviet Union. Yerevan became the capital of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic.

Yerevan has been the capital of independent Armenia since 1991.

On the basis of an alliance agreement with Russia, a Russian brigade is stationed near Yerevan and there is a Russian air force base.

From the center of the Republic Square to the Erebuni Fortress only 1,000 DRAM = 1.95 € per trip, not per passenger. Clarify the price before boarding, as taximeters are rare.

Alternatively, you can use the Uber clone Yandex Taxi. You enter your destination in the app and the price for the trip is displayed directly. Usually between 500 and 1000 dramas in the city center. After confirmation, the position of the driver is displayed, the vehicle type and the license plate. A mobile data connection makes the app much easier to use, of course.

trips

Garni with Hellenistic sun temple restored after an earthquake and Gegard with church including Matagh (animal sacrifice) in the area behind the church on the mountain stream, at least on Sundays as an excursion in one day. Half-day excursion costs approx. 35,000.00 DRAM (= 73.00 € for 2 people without a guide) depending on the provider and plus or including admission. It makes sense to do both places in one day, as Gegard is behind Garni and the road ends in Gegard after about 35 km from Yerevan. Explanations also in English and Russian on boards in both places.

The monastery Chor Virap / Khor Virap (spoken: Ror Virap) is located in the Ararat plain, which is characterized by agriculture and viticulture, at an altitude of approx. 750 m directly at the foot of the legendary and solitary Ararat (5,137 or 5,165 m high) with its double peaks of the large and small Ararat and only 250 m from the barbed wire reinforced border to Turkey with K6 strips and watchtowers. Iran is only about 15 km away here - the Iranian border runs along the Little Ararat, visible from the left of the monastery, in the slope area at the foot of the mountain. The monastery was the place from which Christianity as the state religion was first established worldwide and thus in a country before Rome. The herald's dungeon located in the monastery can now also be viewed via a very (!) Narrow steel ladder that descends 7 m vertically. There should be no fear of space and / or body curves of larger dimensions - you really scrape the front of the ladder and the back of the rock. The place for matagh (animal sacrifice) is not in, but in front of the monastery. Pigeons for animal sacrifices are also offered in front of the monastery on weekdays. The famous postcard view with the monastery in the foreground and Mount Ararat directly behind it is feasible from the main entrance in front of the large cemetery - the cemetery is about 500 m from the monastery parking lot. Costs for a half-day excursion at a distance of approx. 30 km from Yerevan from approx. 25,000 DRAM (= 49 €) for 2 people - there is no entrance fee. English-language boards with explanations.

Echmiadzin / Echmiadzin is also only 25 km from Yerevan and is the seat of the Catholicos, the head of the Armenian Orthodox Church. The trip to Khor Virap is sensibly combined with Echmiadzin. The now existing church complex is enormous. In the museum there are some precious relics such as the Holy Spearhead, wood from the cross of Christ and forearms of Saint Jacob and of men who served as Catholics in the past. Cost of the excursion together with Virap choir approx. 38,000 DRAM (= 75 €) for 2 people plus entrance fees in Etschmiadzin.

As a volcanic mountain, the Aragats is currently the highest mountain in Armenia at 4,095 m. It is practically the counterpart to the Ararat, which is also clearly visible here, and can be climbed from Yerevan on one or two days depending on your mountain experience, previous (!) Altitude acclimatization, fitness and early riser spirit, as well as depending on the summit destination. You take a taxi very early around 4:00 a.m. or later in the day to Lake Kari (mountain lake Kari) at 3,200 m, where there is a cosmic observation station, a small hotel (more like a hostel) and a small inn. If you don't want to go to the Aragats, you can wait here in the sunshine for the returning climbers, as the lake is the starting point and also the end point of a mountain tour. From the lake in about 4 hours there and back to the south summit at 3,795 m - only unmarked, but easily recognizable hiking trails without climbing spots with a varied course. The west summit behind the south summit from the lake is already at an altitude of 4,005 m, for which including the south summit on the return tour you need about 7 hours - here on the ascent, initially leave the south summit on the right and follow recognizable paths up to the valley between The south and west peaks rise, otherwise you will descend again from the south peak and have a counter ascent out of the depression. Even in summer to cross some snowfields above, scree on the summit structure. The north summit is only for the really experienced with rope and harness and, depending on the snow conditions, also in very (!) Steep gullies with ice ax and crampons - if in doubt, order a mountain guide. Depending on the route, with or without the west summit, it can be very strenuous about 10-12 hours to get there and back to the lake. Like the Ararat, the Aragats is also solitary, that is to say individually in the landscape. The weather in the summit area can change in just 5 minutes from bright sunshine to a wall of clouds or fog with the most violent winds and blizzards as well as visibility of 5 - 0 m. Those who are not prepared and not equipped for it risk their life. There is no mountain rescue service here, and neither is a Hubi like in the Alps.

Ararat (Armenian: Masis = mother of the earth), known to us because of Noah's Ark, can be clearly seen with its double peak from Yerevan, as Yerevan is at an altitude of around 800 - 950 m and the mountain with its 5,137 m height without any foothills Rising solitary in front of Yerevan, 55 km away. In the summer from around 8 a.m. daily, the summit is covered by high clouds. The mountain was Armenian until 1918 and is still featured in the national flag of Armenia today, although it has been in Turkey since 1918. The border between Armenia and Turkey has been running since 1918 at the northern foot of the Ararat along the Arex / Araks river. The then bourgeois-democratic republic of Armenia, after losing the war against Turkey, had agreed this with Turkey under Kemal Ataturk and was confirmed in 1921 by the Soviet Union under Lenin. The Ararat can currently only be reached from the Turkish side in today's settlement area of the Kurds (Turkish name: Mountain Turks) in 4 - 5 days from Lake Van or Dogubeyazit after previous (!) Altitude acclimatization in the Alps and because of its location in the area of the first inspection of the General Staff can only be climbed with a special visa from the Turkish military. Complete glacier equipment is necessary, as the mountain is glaciated at the latest from 4,850 m and very steep snow gullies have to be crossed beforehand from 3,600 m, even in midsummer. The German physicist Dr. Friedrich Parrot in 1829 from Yerevan via Etschmiadzin and the village of Arguri, which was later buried by landslides in 1843, and the St. Jacob's Monastery, who served the Russian tsar as the rector of the University of Dorpat (today: Tartu in southern Estonia).
