Jelgava (flight. Jelgava) - city na Latvia, in the central part of the country, approx. 45 km south-west of Riga, at the mouth of the Drykszna River to Lelupa (formerly Aa), a separated town.

Characteristic

It is worth understanding that although Latvia was a constitutional republic of the USSR in 1940–1991, the official language is Latvian. However, a significant minority (up to 40% nationwide and probably just over 50% in the capital Riga) speak Russian. Most of the ethnic Latvians living in the city, not only old enough to attend school during the Soviet era, can also speak and understand Russian. However, many prefer to speak Latvian. English and German are widely understood in places regularly visited by tourists and foreigners, but you may not be lucky when leaving the city center or visiting off the beaten track places.
