Jost Van Dyke is an island in the group of British Virgin Islands.

background

The island was named after the infamous Dutch pirate of the same name who lived there for a while. It has an east-west extension of 6.2 km, is between 600 m and 2.3 km wide and the Majonny Hill in the center is 321 m high. The west and north coasts are inaccessible and partly rocky. There are sheltered bays in the south and east. Around 1720 a larger settlement was built, it was Quaker, religious refugees from England. Electricity has only been available on the island since 1991.

The main town is Great Harbor, with a clinic, police station and customs office. On the west side of the deeply cut bay is the Government Dock, the ferry terminal. There are two more piers directly on the beach, but the water there is only deep enough for dinghies and rubber dinghies. Next to the pier in the middle is the police and customs building, for sailors it is the check-in and check-out point. Nearby, a road at right angles from the sea leads to the ice cream factory. This narrow street is called "The Alley", at the end of which Back Street runs parallel to the sea.

In the southwest the dirt road ends at White Bay, it got its name from the light sandy beach. It is a 15 minute walk from Great Harbor. The reef-protected bay can develop dangerous underwater currents in the winter bays. The Black Point rock divides the beach into two parts roughly in the middle.

The third island town on Garners Bay is Little Harbor in the southeast of the island. In the past, the bay was used to pull small cargo yachts ashore to clean their planks. Today there are three restaurants that are regularly visited by charter boats. The islets of Little Jost Van Dyke and Sandy Cay are about 500 to 800 meters off the east coast. The strait at Little Jost Van Dyke is so shallow that boats cannot pass through it. In the south of the 85 m high island there is a safe anchorage. Sandy Cay is uninhabited but is privately owned. A narrow footpath goes around the whole island.

beaches

  • Great Harbor Bay. This bay is protected by a reef that is only 300 m from the shore. It is praised by sailors for its safe anchorage. The beach "Main Street" is over 400 m long. There are several restaurants and bars on the shore.
  • White Bay. White Bay is one of the most popular island beaches. Many sailing boats anchor in the bay. There is a campsite, hotel, restaurant and several beach bars. You can dive well there. The bay is a 15-20 minute walk from Great Harbor.
