The first human settlements in Hunedoara County date back to time Paleolithic, tens of thousands of years ago. from Neolithic there are many traces of the "Starcevo-Cris" culture, an ancient culture, one of the oldest Neolithic cultures in Europe. The "Turdaș" culture is represented by the most extensive traces of habitation (at Valea Nandrului, near Hunedoara, about 10 ha.). This culture probably used for the first time writing, more than a thousand years before the Sumerians. Then followed the cultures "Petrești" (4500-5000 years ago) and "Coțofeni" (period in which copper and gold were extracted and processed for the first time), then "Bronze Age", "Iron Age" and - finally - "The If era"All these cultures have left their mark like nowhere else in the world.
