Information

The Augustowski Canal

The Augustowski Canal is a priceless work of water engineering, unique on a European scale, from the first half of the 19th century. This water artery was to connect the Vistula - through the rivers: Narew, Biebrza, Netta and Czarna Hańcza - with the Niemen, and then through the Ventspils river with the Baltic port of Ventspils. As the planned Windawski Canal was not built - Augustowski connects to the Baltic Sea via the Neman. The author of the design and the manager of the works in the first stage of the canal construction was Lieutenant Colonel Ignacy Prądzyński, who later became a general fighting in the November Uprising.
