Kaohsiung was founded by fishermen on the offshore island of Cijin. Kaohsiung has one of the largest ports in the world and is a base for the Taiwanese Navy. Kaohsiung became particularly famous in the 1960s, when Taiwan was still the largest banana producer in Asia. Almost the entire harvest was exported from Kaohsiung, mainly to Japan.
