Caribbean are named after the Carib Indian tribe (Caraïbes) who inhabited the southeastern islands of the chain. The Caribbean archipelago is known by many names, however. The earliest is the name West Indies given by mistake by himself Christopher Columbus when he arrived in this area in 1492. He believed that the islands were adjacent India.

The Caribbean is made up of two main island chains. Greater Antilles (islands Cuba, Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic), Jamaica and Puerto Rico) are located to the west, Lesser Antilles (Virgin Islands, Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia and others) lie to the east. Geologically, the mountainous islands of the Greater Antilles and most of the Virgin Islands are the peaks of a mountain range associated with the mountain system of Central and South America. The rest of the Caribbean islands belonging to the Lesser Antilles are the inner volcanic island chain (many still have active or active volcanoes), and the outer island chain, mainly of limestone or coral origin.
