background
Karkemisch is located in the Turkish province of Gaziantep, not far from the Syrian border. Carchemish used to rule the most important ford through the Euphrates, which explains its importance.
Today Karkemisch is an extensive field of ruins on the right bank of the Euphrates. A Turkish military base has been established here and access is currently limited.
history
The earliest settlement finds go back to the third millennium BC. back. In Babylonian documents in the 18th year BC this city is mentioned. In the 17th century B.C. became the city from the Hittites Hattuşa besieged in vain. In the 15th century B.C. Thutmose I moved to the city as the new ruler. He had it carved in stone in a victory column. In the 14th century B.C. the city was accepted into the Hittite Empire. When this in the 12th century B.C. broke apart, the city took over the seat of government for one of the smaller successor states. In the 8th century BC this was finally taken over by the Assyrians and the city was integrated into this empire. The last record of this city comes from the Bible from the 7th century BC.
