Until February 2009, the area consisted of two provinces of Democratic Republic of the Congo, namely West Kasai and East Kasai. Today, the region consists of five provinces: Lulua, Kasai, East Kasai, Lomami, and Sankuru. The capital of the region is luebo. Other major cities in the region are Kinanga and Mbuji-Mayic. The region is best known for its diamond mines.
