Map of Kaş

Kaş was an ancient Lycian settlement that was later inhabited by Greeks. The town lies between the foothills of the Ak-Dağ Mountains (3080 m) and the sea. The place has long since lost its importance at times in antiquity and the Middle Ages, but many stone witnesses have remained.

The fishing town lies on the Turkish Mediterranean coast between Fethiye and Finike. For a long time, its rocky bay was only accessible by sea or via mountain paths. Directly opposite is the easternmost Greek island Kastellórizo, called Meis by the Turks. The cityscape is characterized by many small pensions, bazaar streets, terraces and restaurants as well as the port and its promenade.

In the harbor there are not only fishing boats but also gullets, wooden "sailing" boats, mostly overpowered, but whose masts and sails are rarely in use. On the one hand can These boats sail only in calm seas and weak winds, on the other hand, sailors trained under sails are as rare as they are expensive. The accommodation is usually rather simple, the food good to very good, the prices are mostly fair. Gullets are ideal for small groups (A Turkish-German provider)

As old as the archaeological finds are, the development of the 5.5 km long peninsula is new Yarım Ada, which connects to the city center in the west and soon bends to the SW. The lagoon-like piece of lake between Yarım Ada and the mainland is usually well protected, only in storms from W to SW there are fast high waves and increased wind strengths due to the jet effect. Since 2008, however, a marina has been built there, which is now finished and entered on the "Open Street Map".

Other parts of the city are on the surrounding mountains and their saddle.

Kaş gained national fame through its colony of Europeans, especially artists (polyglot artist website).
