The church of the Theotokos, a neo-Byzantine Orthodox cathedral
  • 1 Church of the Theotokos of the Sign (Знаменский собор), 121 Toturbieva Street. The largest Orthodox church in the North Caucasus, built between 1903-1904 in neo-Byzantine style for the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty. It is the dominant architectural construction in the city, the domes and crosses of the cathedral are far visible from the outskirts of the city. It used to have a much richer interior decoration, including stucco and paintings. However in 1939 the Soviet authorities closed it down and converted it into an industrial warehouse for storing fuel and flammable lubricants. A fire broke out in 1943 and destroyed the entire interior including all the historic murals. It was repaired and returned to religious service in 1945. From the 1990s the number of worshippers decreased significantly, and the remaining structure fell in disrepair. The Russian Federal government classified it as a protected heritage monument in 2011 under the Culture of Russia program, and further restoration works have been scheduled.
