Koekelare[1] is a municipality in West Flanders located in the heart of the Houtland. In addition to the center of Koekelare, the municipality also has three parishes: Bovekerke, Zande and De Mokker.
Koekelare was a turntable in the First World War for the Germans, this can still be seen through the remains of 'Lange Max'.
Arrive
Koekelare is located between Torhout and Diksmuide and is a short distance from Bruges. If you come by train, it is best to get off in Torhout, Diksmuide or Kortemark and then take a bus to Koekelare.
Travel around
If you have a bicycle, it is possible to explore the Kooklarenoene route. This is a 45-kilometre signposted cycle route, which will allow you to get to know the rural roads of the municipality. The cycle route can be picked up at the town hall.
To look at
- Long Max Museum, 2 Cleven Street. In the museum you will become acquainted with the German monster gun 'Long Max' that was used in the First World War to shell Dunkirk, 45 km away. The works of the new museum will start in early 2013. This will double the surface area of the museum. All this for the commemoration of 14-18 in 2014.
