Korolev (Королёв; also transliterated Korolyov) is a medium-sized city in the north of the province of Moscow. The city is best known as Russia's "space capital", the "Cradle of Outer Space Exploration", as it was the nerve center of the Soviet space program. It was formerly a place of dachas for the local elite, a vacation spot for all kinds of famous Russians (eg Anton Chekhov, Vladimir Lenin, Anna Akhmatova, Boris Pasternak, Marina Tsvetaeva, etc.) The city today has become one of the most desirable residential locations outside Moscow.

It was originally founded as Kaliningrad (Калинрад) in 1938, to be the main Soviet center for the production of anti-tank weapons and anti-aircraft defense. In 1946, in the aftermath of World War II, the artillery factory was redesigned for the production of rockets, launch vehicles and spacecraft, under the guidance of Russian scientist Sergei Korolev, who foresaw, consolidated and guided the activities of many people in the program of Soviet space exploration (he was officially referred to at this time as "Supreme Chief Designer"; his true identity was not revealed to the public until after his death). The factory later became known as RKK Energy. The Mission Control Center is also located in Korolev. While the Vostok space vehicle was being developed, this research facility (a "closed city" like many in the Soviet Union) was designated with the codes NII-88 or POB 989. In July 1996, the city was renamed in honor of Sergei Korolev, who died in 1966. Since 1997, Korolev has hosted the International Space Olympics, an annual competition for young people, to promote space research.

By car
Via the M8 road. The city starts from the road, to the right of it, in front of Mitschi.
By train
Podlipki Dachnie and Bolshevo train stations are located within the city proper. Take electrichkas to Bolshevo from Moscow Yaroslavskii railway station. The famous dachas region starts still towards Schiolkovo. Keep in mind that trains to Detskaya and Fryazino go in a different direction than Bolshevo, and you need to differentiate between trains bound for Fryazino (Фрязино) and Fryazevo (Фрязево) - these are completely different destinations. All advertisements at Yaroslavskii train station clearly and specifically pronounce these stations, just listen carefully to them.
By bus
Take bus 392 or 565 from VDNKh metro station in Moscow. Keep in mind the congestion on the M8 for all of these buses, even if they become less severe after opening several levels of traffic interchanges on the M8 between Mytishchi and Korolev.

Two kilometers from the city to the south, in the conservation area of the national park "Island of Reindeers" is Torfyanka, also known as "Bike-Lake" - a popular place for cyclists in the Moscow region. From the city it can be reached by bus № 7, which leaves from Bolshevo station, stop at the end station "Turfa" (Торфопредприятие).
