Krakow - Krakatau

The Krakatoa is an island and active volcano in Indonesia, located in the street of Sunda between Java and Sumatra. The volcano is best known for the unprecedentedly heavy eruption in 1883.

Understand

On Monday morning, August 27, 1883, Krakatoa erupted. The mountain rose, split open and plunged into the sea. It is the largest volcanic eruption to date that modern humans have witnessed.

A tidal wave of about 30 meters high that ravaged the coasts of Java and Sumatra and washed away entire towns and villages. Due to the high waves, ships, such as the Dutch naval steamship Berouw, were thrown many kilometers inland. A 50-kilometer-high cloud of ash rose from the volcano and plunged the area into deep darkness. The eruption was so violent that the eardrums of nearby sailors burst. The roar and pop could be heard as far as Australia.

The volcano largely disappeared below the surface of the water, but in 1932 a new volcanic island arose on the same spot, which was given the name Anak Krakatau ("child of Krakatau"). In November 2007, the volcano became active again. The new island can be visited by tourists under supervision. On October 30, 2010, Anak Krakatau erupted.
