There are three politically distinct regions on the island: Republic of Cyprus (European union member) is a broad internationally recognized state. But it only controls the region in the south. Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, although only diplomatically recognized by Turkey, is a functionally separate country. Akrotiri and Dhekelia British military base areas have clear borders with the Republic of Cyprus, although they are legally separate from both republics.
