Geographical notes
The highest peak is Grand Montagne with approximately 276m.
Background
Baptized with the name Desirada by Christopher Columbus when, in 1493 during his second voyage, he ran out of food, La Désirade, despite the auspicious name, did not have a great future. In fact, as early as the end of the 18th century, a hospital for lepers was built on the island and it also became an exile for the wild. The Lazzaretto was then closed in 1954.
In 1998 the island was devastated by hurricane "Ugo", which upset the already fragile local economy.
