Hague is a city of South holland. (in Dutch: Den Haag or 's-Gravenhage ) is a city in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. It is the seat of the Dutch parliament and government, and the residence of King Willem-Alexander. It is not the capital city, which is Amsterdam. The municipality (which is the city) has more than 548,000 inhabitants (2021), it is the third largest city in the Netherlands.
The Hague is located in the North Sea and is home to Scheveningen, the most popular seaside resort in the Netherlands. Also the smaller complex of Kijkduin is part of the city.

The Hague (Dutch: Den Haag or 's-Gravenhage), is the city of palaces and avenues, of embassies and ministries and is the seat of the government of the Netherlands and the International Court of Justice (Dutch: Internationaal Hof van Justitie) and residence of the royal family. It is here that the Dutch sovereigns are crowned. The Hague is a cosmopolitan city. Capital of the province of Zuid-Holand (South holland).
Internationally, The Hague is often referred to as the "judicial capital of the world" due to the many international courts found in the city. These include the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and, since 2004, the International Criminal Court. In addition to these institutions, The Hague is home to more than 150 international organizations and many EU institutions, multinational companies and embassies. This gave the city a distinctive international character, one that is strikingly different from Amsterdam. Rather than having the many foreign tourists and fortune seekers drawn in by Amsterdam's reputation for enthusiasm and liberalism, The Hague generally has more expats working and living in the city due to the number of international institutions and companies. Because of this, The Hague has a reputation for being a wealthy, conservative, and somewhat laid-back city.
The Hague has very little of the edginess and excitement of Amsterdam; however, it serves its inhabitants well in a number of ways, such as large green areas, 11 km of coastline, attractive shopping streets, and an extensive multicultural scene. Instead of having canals like other Dutch cities, The Hague has streets and avenues that are slightly wider than those in the rest of the country, giving the city a more continental feel. Instead of the typical 17th century Dutch Renaissance houses, it has 18th century mansions in Baroque and Classicist styles. The city is considered by many to be the most stately in the country. Just outside the city center, the posh neighborhoods exude a more 19th-century look with eclectic architecture and art nouveau.
However, the further you get from the boardwalk and downtown, the more neighborhoods tend to be less affluent. Some in Laan van Meerdervoort, which runs parallel to the seashore, draw a dividing line between the rich and the shallower areas. Areas away from the sea tend to have much less green space. An exception to this is a centrally located park, Zuiderpark, which also used to contain the stadium of the local football team ADO Den Haag. Some of his supporters were known as the most notorious hooligans in the country, perpetuating a stereotype of "lower class" for the inhabitants of that area.
The Hague offers great architecture, from the picturesque government complex of the Binnenhof to the grand and stately mansions of Lange Voorhout. Museums like the Mauritshuis are among the best in the country. For foodies, The Hague offers some of the best Indonesian cuisine in the country, due to large-scale immigration from this former Dutch colony. The city also offers good opportunities for excursions, such as extensive green spaces for walking and cycling, as well as dunes and recreation areas by the sea just a few tram stops from the city center. The Hague also offers some particularly attractive attractions for children, such as the miniature city of Madurodam and the 360-degree Omniversum cinema.
Every day thousands of bicycles are left in front of the postmodern "New Babylon" complex and the Den Haag Centraal intermodal station.
The city has undergone great development in the form of modern architecture projects. Constructions include the City Hall and Central Library by American architect Richard Meier, De "Snoeptrommel" (known to locals as Candy-Box), a round shopping mall next to the old city hall, and a collection of postmodern bricks. clad office towers between the city hall and Centraal train station, providing new housing for various ministries. A major infrastructure development has been the construction of an underground tram tunnel under the Grote Marktstraat, which is used by regular trams, and a new light rail system, known as RandstadRail, linking The Hague with the neighboring towns of Zoetermeer and Rotterdam.
A major redevelopment project is underway in the area around the Centraal train station. Here, skyscrapers like the 142m Hoftoren tower over the city and several other high-rise towers are being built.
Since 2015, The Hague and its suburbs have been part of the Rotterdam-The Hague Metropolitan Region.

To get
The Hague does not have an international airport.
The best way to get there is from Rotterdam Airport, which for a short time has been called Rotterdam The Hague Airport (which is 25 km away), but it has few international flights, and then from Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam) which, being the largest airport in Holland, has more connections with other countries.
Boat
Scheveningen is a sea port, but ships of the line no longer go there. If no sea is too high for you, you can navigate the North Sea yourself. Inland captains reach The Hague via the Vliet or the Schie and then the Trekviet. There is a so-called Passantenhaven, for water sports enthusiasts and their boats, in Laakhaven.
By train
The Hague has two main train stations, serving national and international routes.
- 1 Den Haag Central Station (Den Haag CS). It is the largest train station in The Hague. It is within walking distance of the city center and Malieveld Park. Den Haag Centraal has connections to Amsterdam (45 minutes), Schiphol Airport (30 minutes), Utrecht (35 minutes), Groningen (2.5 hours) and many other cities in Randstad and the Netherlands. Passengers coming from Rotterdam can also use the E line of the Rotterdam metro to travel to Den Haag Centraal. You can reach Central Station from a variety of international destinations such as Cologne, Berlin, Frankfurt, Prague, Moscow, Basel, and Copenhagen via the city of Utrecht. Upon arrival, the city center of The Hague is about a 5-minute walk from the central station. - 2 Den Haag Hollands Spoor (Den Haag HS). It is a 20-minute walk from the central station. It has intercity train connections to Antwerp and Brussels, as well as national connections to Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Amsterdam, Leiden and Delft. Southbound trains from Den Haag CS always pass through Hollands Spoor. To get to the city center, walk straight from the main entrance and follow the Stationsweg through Chinatown, and it will end right in the city center. Edit
Visitors are more likely to use the Centraal Station as it is closer to the center, tourist attractions and shops. It also has the best local public transport links via tram and bus, and is also safer at night than Hollands Spoor, which is in a somewhat uneven part of the city. The only reason to use Hollands Spoor is to take the international trains to Antwerp and Brussels. In addition to southbound trains from Centraal, tram lines 9, 10, 15, 16 and 17 also serve the short distance from Centraal Station to Hollands Spoor. Trains to and from Schiphol Airport depart from both stations. The best way to get there is from Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam) by direct train or with transfer in 40 minutes. By bus
- International bus , there are international bus services scheduled to / from various European cities. A major provider of international scheduled bus services is 'Eurolines'. Arrival and departure stops are located at the top of The Hague CS train station on the bus platform.

By car
The Hague is connected by free motorways to Amsterdam (A4 and A44), Rotterdam (A13) and Utrecht (A12). Access to the center is via the A12 motorway that penetrates the city center, like a needle, and ends at a large traffic junction just north of the historic center. Approaching and leaving the city from any of these highways can take a long time during the morning and afternoon rush hours. On hot summer days, hundreds of thousands of people try to reach Scheveningen Beach by car and large traffic jams of up to 50 km long can occur, causing delays of up to several hours. On those days, consider using public transportation. The P R Hoornwijck amusement park and facility was opened in 2008 in Laan van Hoornwijck next to the Ypenburg interchange. Cycling
The Hague is excellent for exploring by bike. From the center, all parts of the city can be reached in 30 to 45 minutes. In the center, in Scheveningen and Kijkduin, there are free, guarded bicycle sheds from Biesieklette, where it is also possible to charge electric bicycles. [4]. The passing paths are provided with separate bike lanes. The bike lanes also cut through the dunes and city parks, making biking calmer, so you forget you're in a city. The Zuiderstrand, located behind the Westduinpark, the strip between the port of Scheveningen and Kijkduin, is best reached by bike. From Kijkduin you can even pedal through the Hoek van Holland dunes. There are bike places at the beach entrances, which can be rented at Central Station and Hollands Spoor Stations and elsewhere in The Hague and Scheveningen.
By train
You can also travel within The Hague by train. Before the introduction of the OV-Chipkaart, this was also possible with the strippenkaart, and it didn't matter if you were traveling by tram or train. By bus
For visitors to The Hague, public transport is a good option for getting around the city and its immediate surroundings. Popular destinations such as the city center, Scheveningen beach and the stations are connected by many bus and tram connections. The nearby region, Leidschendam Voorburg, Rijswijk and Delft, can also be reached by tram and city bus. Finally, most Veolia Orange and White buses also carry local passengers on their route through the city, with the exception of lines with an s-je after the number, which indicates an express service. parking
Paid parking is applies in the center, Scheveningen and many other areas around offices, shopping centers and the Hague market (from € 1.00 for 40 min. The municipality is constantly expanding the number of neighborhoods where payment must be made. Introduced in 2008 is paid parking in various residential areas between 18:00 and 24:00. Please note that this may be in effect when you go out at night. To be clear: these machines charge € 1.50 per hour from 6:00 pm to midnight, seven days a week.
Parking routes
Since 20 November 2009, a traffic circulation plan in the city center has been in force, whereby traffic from the city center is kept out by bollards. These are poles that sink into the ground for permit holders. As soon as the permit holder has passed, the pole will slowly rise. Certainly at first when an unsuspecting motorist without a permit followed a permit holder over the ascending bollard, the cars were damaged. These barriers create three parking routes for the relevant parts of the center.
S100 center ring
Around the center there is a Centrumring, which either detours through the traffic around the center or leads from one part of the city center to the other.
Ring S200
The S200 is not a true highway ring. Only the A4 between Leidschendam and The Hague-Southwest has that status and is part of the ring. The N14 and part of the N211 are also part of it.

Center
The heart of the city contains most of the historical architecture from the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods and is easily accessible on foot. You will also find many outdoor cafes and shops near Plein on Lange Poten or just east of there on Hofweg.
- 1 Plein (southwest of the central station along the Herengracht and Korte Poten). This square - Plein simply translates to 'square' in English - is one of the most elegant in the center. Located right next to the Binnenhof, it is bordered by historic government buildings on three of its four sides. The north side is full of bars and cafes, which stretch out onto the square in summer. These outdoor cafes are quite popular with politicians from neighboring Binnenhof, and even Prime Minister Mark Rutte can be seen here having a pint regularly. The square is also the scene of demonstrations against government policies. The statue in the middle is that of William of Orange, heralded as the founding father of the Dutch nation. Edit

The Binnenhof (courtyard inside ) is a castle built in the 13th century as the residence of the Count of Holland. Since then, it has been almost subsequently the seat of the government of Holland, and later of all the Netherlands. It used to be surrounded by moats on all sides. Since then, it has been modified countless times to suit the expanding Dutch government. The moats have been filled, but the castle still borders a pond (the Hofvijver, Court Pond). In its waters the old buildings continue to be reflected. Today, the Binnenhof houses the two houses of the Dutch parliament and the Prime Minister's office in a small round tower opposite the Mauritshuis. Enter through one of the Plein or Buitenhof gates and you will find yourself in a medieval enclosed courtyard, surrounded by 13th to 19th century architecture. There may be crowds gathering here at times due to public demonstrations, television broadcasts, or receptions for foreign officials. In the center is the Ridderzaal(Hall of the Knight), the centerpiece of the castle, which is used today for ceremonial purposes. Unfortunately, the other splendid rooms in the complex are closed to the general public. However, it is possible to attend parliament meetings. The House of Representatives of the parliament meets every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in a modern 1992 chamber. Housed in a 17th century palace overlooking the water of the Hofvijver Pond, the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis contains the ancient collection of the last Dutch stadtholder, William the V. While the museum is quite small (a full tour takes just over a hour) contains some of the most famous works of the old Dutch masters, such as Johannes Vermeer ( Girl with a pearl earring Y view of delft ), Rembrandt van Rijn ( The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp ), Andy Warhol ("Queen Beatrix"), Rembrandt Self-Portraits at 20 and 63, among others. Built in 1370 as a gateway to the Binnenhof complex, the Gevangenpoort (prison gate) became a prison in 1420. In 1853, the prison closed and became a museum. - 7 Lange Voorhout (to the northwest along both sides of the entrances to the Binnenhof). This former expanse of the Hague Forest is now a large tree-lined square, surrounded on all sides by large 18th-century terraced houses. The large baroque building on the west side is the 'Huis Huguetan', home to the Dutch supreme court. The square is especially pretty in spring, when its crocuses are in bloom. On Thursdays and Sundays there is a very good antique and book market. Every summer, the square hosts Den Haag Sculptuur (The Hague Sculpture), a free outdoor sculpture exhibition. The fortified building on the corner is the United States Embassy and has been a point of contention between locals and embassy officials due to increased security. Edit

This former royal palace was converted in 2002 into a museum dedicated to the famous Dutch graphic artist MC Escher. The first two floors display prints, sketches, and footage showing how Escher progressed from realistic imagery to his later work on optical illusion and geometric patterns. The upper deck offers a journey through Escher's worlds with interactive displays and games and a special Escher room. There are also scavenger hunts for younger children. - 10 Oude Stadhuis The original town hall is a small building from the 15th century when The Hague was a small settlement around the Royal Court. In the 18th century it was expanded and now has a large façade in front of the Grote kerk (Great Church) from the 15th century, originally used as the main place of worship in the city, but now it functions mainly as an exhibition space. - 11 Stadhuis In the early 1990s, the township moved into this massive white building by American architect Richard Meier, dubbed by locals as the Ice Palace. Step inside to take a look at the majestic main hall, which has exhibits on various themes related to the city. The two airlifts across the corridor connecting the various offices had to be fenced off to prevent suicides, but still offer a beautiful view of the atrium below. The town hall borders a large modern square, somewhat arid, with a fountain. Contrasts strongly with the baroque Nieuwe Kerk (Iglesia Nueva), located in a small park across the road. Edit
- 12 Denneweg .This street is a privileged area to find specialized and antique shops. It also has some good exclusive pubs and restaurants to recharge after shopping. Parallel to the Denneweg run the Hooigracht and Smidswater canals, which are two of the few canals in The Hague compared to other major Dutch cities and towns. Edit
- 13 Paleis Noordeinde (near Prinsessewal). This is the royal palace that King Willem-Alexander uses as his office. While the interior is not open to the public, the 17th-century façade can be seen from Noordeinde Street, which also has a large number of art galleries. The Panorama Mesdag is a cylindrical painting from 1881, more than 14 m high and 120 m in circumference. One of the most famous painters of the Hague school, Hendrik Willem Mesdag, created a view of the sea, the dunes and the village of Scheveningen. - 15 Vredespaleis , Carnegieplein 2 (bus 24 (Kijkduin stop), tram 1 (to Scheveningen Noorderstand)), ☏ [70 3024137], ✉ [[8]]. The Peace Palace was built in 1913 to house the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which was expected to provide a means to legally resolve international disputes. Ironically, World War I broke out only a year later. Today, the Peace Palace also houses the International Court of Justice, the main judicial body of the UN, which resolves disputes between countries only. A free exhibition that shows the history of the Netherlands through original copies of important documents historical. It has the original copy of Münster's peace treaty with Spain, which marked the end of the 80-year Dutch war of independence in 1648, and the original deed of sale of the Dutch purchase of Manhattan to the Indians. The tallest apartment tower in The Hague, nicknamed "the iron" in Dutch for its elongated triangular shape, has an observation deck, café, bar and restaurant at the top. A drink is included in the ticket for the elevator that takes you to the upper two floors, alternatively you can opt for lunch, dinner or Highest Tea in the restaurant. Statenkwartier area
The Statenkwartier area, nestled between the dunes and downtown, has leafy avenues and 19th-century dwellings and is very popular with The Hague's large expat community. The area is ideal for walking tours of the 19th century mansions, which showcase The Hague's architectural diversity. All kinds of neo and modern styles are represented here, especially Art Nouveau architecture. On the main street of Statenkwartier, Frederik Hendriklaan or 'Fred', you will find good shops, delicatessens and restaurants. The area also has a number of tourist attractions, which make it worth visiting, most of them clustered around the Gemeentemuseum in Stadhouderslaan.

The Gemeentemuseum (Municipal Museum) has a small collection of classical modern art (Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Monet, Sisley, Degas, Bacon). It has an especially large collection of Mondrians, showing the entire career of this painter known for his works with red, blue and yellow shapes. The Gemeentemuseum also has a large selection of paintings from the Hague School, a movement of 19th-century landscape artists, as well as period rooms and collections of fashion, musical instruments, and decorative arts. Rotating exhibitions on 19th and early 20th century art held here are also quite popular. The museum is housed in a yellow brick building built in 1938 by Dutch architect Hendrik Berlage, a pioneer in modern architecture and best known for his Beurs van Berlage, the exchange building on Damrak in Amsterdam. Next to the Gemeentemuseum are the GEM, a museum with rotating exhibitions of contemporary art, and the Fotomuseum Den Haag, which has rotating exhibitions of photography. € 8. and
Do
Since The Hague was founded on a former hunting lodge, there are a variety of parks and green spaces that are ideal for exploring. Like most cities in the Netherlands, The Hague is extremely bike-friendly and it's easy to get from one place to another by bike if you feel like getting out of the city center. Scheveningen (and to a lesser extent Kijkduin) is a busy seaside resort full of cafes on the seafront and near the dunes. The best months to get out and see The Hague on foot or by pedal are late spring, summer and early fall. The beachfront area can be very crowded as tourists from all over Europe come to visit and enjoy along the North Sea coast.
