La Plata is the capital of Buenos Aires Province and lies in Buenos Aires metropolitan area, about 50 km east of the state capital itself. The city is one of the largest planned cities in South America and today has about 650,000 inhabitants, with suburbs about 750,000.
La Plata is known for its spacious urban structure, one of the most important universities in the country and above all for its natural science museum, the largest in Argentina.

background
La Plata was founded in 1880. When the capital of Argentina was finally relocated to Buenos Aires, it was separated from the already existing province of Buenos Aires and became an independent district. La Plata was founded in order to straighten out Buenos Aires, which already then made up the lion's share of the Argentine population, and to establish a separate capital for the province. Today La Plata is growing together again with the once separated Buenos Aires, in some statistics both cities are already listed as a metropolitan area with over 14 million inhabitants.
La Plata is a modern city with lots of green spaces and wide boulevards. In addition, the most famous architects of the turn of the century around 1900 came together for the buildings. But it is also a city of education and culture. The University of La Plata is one of the largest and most prestigious in Argentina and is one of the few who can also be found in the upper echelons of international university rankings. The Natural science museum is probably the most famous sight in the city. The palaeontological department is particularly worth seeing, in which, among other things, skeletons of the giant dinosaurs discovered in Patagonia are found.
getting there
By plane
Although La Plata has its own airport, it has only a few connections. Because of the good connection, we recommend arriving via Buenos Aires.
By train
There is a cheap train from Buenos Aires. This drives at the train station Constitución and runs in dense regular traffic.
By bus
Despite the proximity to Buenos Aires, there are many direct connections to major cities in the country without having to cross the state capital. In individual cases, however, you have to change there.
In the street
From Buenos Aires, La Plata is via a motorway (Autopista Buenos Aires - La Plata, Approach via the district La Boca) to reach. The journey from other parts of the country corresponds to that of the state capital.
By boat
La Plata has a large port, but it is limited to industrial products and there are no passenger connections.
mobility
Public transport is handled by city buses. Trains only run in the neighborhoods towards Buenos Aires.

trips
Close to the city Magdalena (20 km east) there is a nature reserve where you can get to know the original landscape of the Río de la Plata. There is another reserve near the city Punta Lara (10 km northwest, also on the Río de la Plata), but this is particularly crowded with anglers from Buenos Aires on weekends.
