La Romieu is a city of Gers in the South West of France.
Understand
The locality is located on the roads of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. At the heart of this great South-West, rich in history and heritage, La Romieu stands out for its magnificent XIV collegiate churche century, listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco since 1998.
La Romieu was initially a modest priory founded by two Benedictine monks in the land of Firmacon dependent on the Viscount of Lomagne, returning from a pilgrimage to Rome (hence the name Larroumieu meaning in Gascon "pilgrim". This foundation would be dated 1062. This priory was reunited with the Saint-Victor abbey of Marseille on .
Around the monastic cells built by the pilgrims, the inhabitants went. This city was defended by a belt of thick walls of 8 to 10 meters height. Three doors -Miramont, Rouède, of the fountain - gave access to it. Nowadays, of these three doors, only the door of the Fountain with its primitive aspect is still visible.
During the Revolution, in 1790, La Romieu was the capital of the canton. The Romanesque Notre-Dame church located on the village square was destroyed, giving the current configuration of the village center.
At the beginning of the XXe century, La Romieu brought together 2 700 Ha about 850 inhabitants. We could find all the trades necessary at that time (farrier, cooper, doctor, shoemaker, carpenter, hairdresser, grocer ...). The two wars (1914-1918 and 1939-1945) marked the decline of the population.
Today, a modest village of 550 inhabitants, dependent on the canton of Lectoure-Lomagne, La Romieu remains a very authentic place, where history is still inscribed on the walls. Dominated by its collegiate church and its imposing towers, protecting its Gothic fountain, this constantly changing village achieves a perfect balance between yesterday and tomorrow.
