Understand
Around 1017, Géraud (French, according to the authors, in Gérald or Gérard), count of Crozant, viscount of Bridiers, vassal of the Duchy of Aquitaine, gives this' Villa Sosterranea to the Saint-Martial Abbey of Limoges. Following this donation, the construction of the church began in 1019, which, begun in Romanesque style, will be completed in 1220 in Gothic style.
Until the 16th century, the city gradually surrounded itself with ditches and ramparts. Of the walls of the enclosure, two have been preserved: the Porte Saint-Jean and the Porte du Puycharraud.
During the 16th century, La Souterraine came under the administrative control of the general government of Limoges.
From 1790 to 1800, it was the capital of the Souterraine district.
19th century: Since the Middle Ages, as in all the communes of the department, many men left every year in the big cities on the building sites to be hired as mason, carpenter, roofer. This is how the masons of the Creuse became cathedral builders; in 1624, they built the dike of La Rochelle, in the nineteenth century, they participated in the construction of the Paris of Baron Haussmann. Initially temporary from March to November, emigration became definitive: thus Creuse lost half of its population between 1850 and 1950. We find in Martin Nadaud's book "Mémoires de Léonard", the description of this exodus which marked so strongly lifestyles.
