La Vega Real is located on the edge of the fertile Cibao Valley, about 130 km northwest of Santo Domingo. The origin of the place goes back to the year 1495 and Christopher Columbus. He had the third fortress built there on American soil. Five kilometers behind La Vega Real, on the Holy Hill, the Santo Cerro, is the place where the first cross in the New World, donated by Queen Isabel La Catôlica, was erected.
