The 589.6 km² large and up to 18 m deep lake is fed with fresh water from the west by the Río Polochic and drains into the sea via the Río Dulce in the east. Numerous sights such as nature reserves and the fortress Castillo San Felipe de Lara make this region a popular tourist destination.
