Lamentin is a city in Martinique.
background
This industrial city received municipal rights in 1837, it is located on the Lerzarde River and still belongs to the Fort-de-France area. It is connected to the city center, 7 km away, via a motorway.
The old town is only small and the narrow streets are spread around the church, the cemetery and the old town hall from 1935 on Rue Schoelcher. Opposite is the new town hall with a clock tower from 1998 in post-modern style based on a design by the architect Alex Pierre-Louis. Questionable concrete blocks but also the mansions of the nouveau riche were built around them. Today the center of the city is the library, an architecturally bold building of the “très grande bibliothèque”. The Continent shopping center is located nearby on Place d'Armes.
To the west, on the other side of the highway, are the districts of La Californie and Lezarde.La Californie is one of the last places on the island where lime is still made from mussels. There are only 4 Lamentin lime kilns. In the past, lime was particularly used in construction in Martinique, at a time when cement was not imported in large quantities.
In addition to the international airfield and industrial facilities, you will find the racecourse there. The beer of the same name is brewed in the Lorraine brewery. Heineken beer and Pepsi Cola are produced under license. Banana and sugar cane plantations can be found on the Lamentin plain on the Le Lézarde river, and with a length of 35 km, it is the longest river on the island.

Lamentin is east of the motorway triangle of the N1 from Fort-de-France to Le Robert and the N5 to Trois-Ilets and the south coast. The airport is located in the southwest of the city.

Tourist Attractions
- Saint Laurent Church. The Saint Laurent church is known for its colorful windows and interiors made by French artists such as Dragan from Bordeaux. The figures of Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary come from Maumejan from Paris. Both sides of the gallery are adorned with monumental paintings by Arosteguy the Elder. The church forecourt is adorned by a fountain. In the cemetery you can find many graves of important families such as Du Buc or Baillardel de Lareinty, as well as the St. Aurin-Gallet chapel, a memorial to the victims of the 1948 air disaster.
