This mountainous (and locally cold) region is the main coffee-growing area in Nicaragua. Since coffee needs shade, the cloud forest vegetaion has often been preserved in at least a natural state.
In addition, this is also the part of the country in which the Contra war has raged the most violently. Although the country is generally considered mine-free nowadays, there are said to be smaller areas on the Nicaraguan-Honduran border where not all mines have been cleared. Before tours through the wilderness you should definitely do some research and possibly spend the money on a local guide.
