background

In Roseau the extension of King George V Street leads after 400 m over the Roseau River and then parallel to this river up into the mountains, almost to the Morne Macaque. After 2 km the road branches off at Fond Cani, is signposted. On the left path you get to the place Trafalgar and until after laudation. The right path crosses the Roseau River again and over Copt Hall you reach the farming village Morne Prosper 450 m above sea level, or past the Chamberlain Estate to the sulfur springs of Wotten Waven. From the end of these roads, various slopes lead into the national park to the Valley of Desolation, Fresh Water Lake and Boeri Lake.

The Trafalgar Estate was a coffee plantation. In 1827 26 slaves worked there. The annual harvest was 1910 kg of coffee beans. After 1840 people tried to grow sugar cane. After the abolition of slavery, the former slaves shared parts of the plantation. Today a large part of the vegetables for the city of Roseau are grown there.

Also on the Wotten waves Coffee was planted in the plantation. The 140 hectare plantation has been owned by the prominent Laidlaw family since the beginning of the English occupation in 1763. With the help of 32 slaves, up to 5,600 kg of coffee beans were harvested per year. After 1840 sugar cane had to be planted because pests made it impossible to grow coffee. 20 years later the plantation was sold to the Lipset family. The abolition of slavery and the drop in sugar prices led to frequent changes of ownership in the years that followed. Liberated slaves settled on the plantation land and founded a village community.

Laudat is the starting point for several excursions in the national park.

getting there

In the street

From the city center of the capital Roseau, the asphalt road leads along the Rosau River up into the mountains. The road splits for the first time after three kilometers and a second time one kilometer later. On the individual sections, none of which allows a different way back, you reach the villages of Wotten Waven, Trafalgar and Laudat.

Tourist Attractions

  • Less than two kilometers north of the freshwater lake is a beautifully situated lake, the Boeri Lake about 120 m higher than Freshwater Lake. This is the highest lake on the island. There is also a crater lake filled with rainwater. According to the park administration, the lake has a maximum depth of 36 m with a largest extension of 1.8 ha. Due to the inflow of rainwater, the water level and size change frequently. In a dry season it can be up to 8 m below the high water mark. The water from Boeri Lake also flows into Freshwater Lake. From Freshwater Lake, the ascent through a giant fern forest takes about 45 minutes.
  • The Freshwater Lake is the deep crater lake of an extinct volcano. The lake is about 758 m above sea level and is about 4 km from the village of Laudat, the road is extended to the lake because there is a dam and a hydroelectric system for the power supply of the country. The damming has changed the shape of the lake and the whole area. Originally it was only fed by rainwater and a few small springs, and the runoff filled the Rosalie River. Since November 1976, the electricity company has been diverting around 7 million liters of water from three rivers that flow down the northeast flank of the Morne Macaque into the lake every day. You can walk around the lake once in an hour. In good weather conditions you can see from there to the east coast.
  • In the center of the village of Cochrane, turn onto a poorer road to the northeast and after 500 m you will reach the Hope Estate. From there it is another 3 km to the waterfall Middleham Falls. Temperatures of 82 to 92 ° C have been measured at its edges. Bubbling gases escape at regular intervals. The lake is the second largest of its kind in the world and is considered the greatest natural wonder. The 90-minute walk with a guide costs around 50 EC $. Local guides take regular tours of the national park from Roseau. The 10 km long ascent is sometimes difficult, takes about three hours and costs around 80 EC $.

  • Hikes in the National Park. There are old footpaths to the Atlantic coast, these should only be undertaken with a guide.
