Geography

Located northwest of Montreal with an area of 22 000 km2, the Laurentians is one of the most popular tourist regions in Quebec by nature lovers. This region takes its name from the ancient mountain range crossing the southeastern part of the Canadian Shield from east to west.

Its southern part, Basses Laurentides or Porte des Laurentides, was colonized by farmers during the French regime. Its central part, Coeur des Laurentides, and its northern part, Hautes-Laurentides, were colonized later for its forest wealth.

Story

It is in the XIXe century that the region will experience a great expansion at the demographic and economic level thanks to the talent of colonizer of the priest Antoine Labelle. The latter contributed to the development of the region, among other things, by promoting the railway linking Montreal and Mont-Laurier (one of the northernmost towns in the region). Since the region was until then accessible almost mainly by a network of rivers, the most important of which was the Rivière du Nord, the railway line would become its main artery until the middle of the 20th century.e century.

The wealthy city dwellers of northeastern North America now have access to this region, thanks to Little North Train, the tourist industry is developing there. Its hills with interesting drop-offs attract skiers. Its many lakes and rivers make it a favorite spot for sport fishing. Its still wild flora and fauna delight nature lovers. We thus see the development of municipalities with a strong tourist character such as: St. Saviour, Sainte-Agathe and Saint-Jovite (Mont Tremblant).

With the development of the automobile fleet and the Quebec road network, the railway line of the Little North Train in linear park towards the end of the 20th century. At the place of the railway, one of the longest cycle paths in Quebec (approximately 200 km) which turns into a winter cross-country ski trail in its southern part and into a path for snowmobilers in its northern part.

  • 4 Sainte-Agathe-Des-Monts (Highway 15 north, exits 83 to 89) – City offering several activities such as theater and boat trips.

Other destinations

The Laurentians offer many ski centers and countless snowmobile trails. Hikers will find the perfect trail among the thousands that exist. The adventurer will be able to challenge nature in the many national parks offering excursions in the backcountry. Families will find activities for everyone including snow slides, water parks and more.

  • 1 Mont-Tremblant National Park (Highway 15 north, follow directions to Secteur de la Diable) – A well-known national park in Quebec; Camping, rustic cabins, fishing, hunting, boating, observation ... This park offers a full range of activities. The adventurer will be able to survey the backcountry of the park for a feeling of adventure to its maximum. (requires filling out a form beforehand here.
    This Park offers various types of accommodation, such as camping, chalets, yurts and ready-to-camp packages. Many hiking trails. Activities like Via ferrata and canoeing down the river. Bicycle paths and nature interpretation center in the Diable sector.
  • Tremblant resort (Autoroute 15 north, QC117, follow directions) – Surely the most famous ski resort in Quebec and one of the most popular in Canada: La Station Tremblant is a village housing hotels, shops, slopes, restaurants, lounges, bars, festivals ... Its many slopes and hotels will be ideal for skiing. ski enthusiast and its magnificent restaurant-belvedere with a breathtaking view of Mont-Tremblant!

For cycling enthusiasts The Laurentians are full of very safe cycle paths. The P`tit train du nord trail stretches over 200 kilometers from St-Jérôme to Mont Laurier. On its route there are old stations at different kilometers where you can sleep for the night at a minimal price and eat there. The track is partially paved there.

There is no different language or dialect in this region, however Quebec expressions and words are used a little more in these regions, but the official language remains French.

Do

The Laurentians are a very touristy region, you will not have time to wonder what to do. If you prefer to live in more rustic conditions and stay in touch with nature, take a tour of the region's national parks or wildlife reserves. The latter offer several more or less rustic accommodation options as well as a range of activities, such as water sports, hiking, fishing, hunting ... etc. while remaining in a natural environment.
