Le Carbet is a city in Martinique.

background

On June 15, 1502, Christopher Columbus is said to have gone ashore at this point. 133 years later, Belain d`Esnambuc was there to take possession of the island for the French royal family. Originally the settlement was founded by Indians. It became an independent church district as early as 1645, making it one of the oldest on the island. In 1822 there were major slave revolts. In 1891 a hurricane claimed 800 lives and the American steamship “Nedwhite” sank. Today the place is known for two rum distilleries and the Gauguin Museum on the beach of Anse Turin.

To the south of Carbet is the district of Le Coin and the Grande Anse beach. To the north are the beaches of Petite Anse, Anse Turin and Anse Latouche, then already 5 km outside.

beaches

Plage de l`anse Turin, 3½ km north of the town, is also very popular with the locals, toilets and showers are available, diving equipment can be rented, and hawkers sell food and drinks.

Everything was destroyed in the volcanic eruption of 1902. Today the plantation with its ruins is a theme park for those who love beautiful gardens.
