Le Cateau-Cambrésis is a city of Nord Pas de Calais.
Understand
Le Cateau-Cambrésis, formerly Le Cateau, is a small town in the Nord department, arrondissement of Cambrai. The City belonged for a long time to the Bishopric of Cambrai. In 1001, an edict of the Emperor of Germania, Otho III, authorizes the Bishop of Cambrai to fortify the Castle, to erect it in town and grants the right to hold a market and to coin money. It is thus due to born Chastel in Cambrésis and later, transformed into Cateau-Cambrésis. During the Middle Ages, the city enjoyed great prosperity thanks to the Bishops of Cambrai. It was besieged and devastated many times and rebuilt during the Middle Ages.Enclosed in its ramparts until the 17th century, the city retains its old structure of narrow sloping streets, starting from the islet that was the Benedictine abbey. . History has retained the name of Cateau-Cambrésis following the treaty signed in 1559 between France (Henri II) and Spain (Philippe II) which gave France the strongholds of Metz, Toul and Verdun. In 1642, the Cateau Cambrésis is occupied by French troops. Louis XIII ordered the destruction of the gates and ramparts and the inhabitants fled the city. The Treaty of Nijmegen linked Cateau Cambrésis to France in 1676. In 1789, the privileges of the archbishops were removed. During the wars of the Revolution and the Empire, the city was occupied in 1793 by the Austrians and then in 1814 by the Russians who settled there for 2 years. The 19th century saw the development of textile factories. The station was inaugurated in 1855, with the Battle of Cateau fought on by the British troops slowed down the German advance and allowed the regrouping of the French Armies for the Battle of the Marne. The German cannonades in October 1918 caused enormous damage, and during the First World War the city suffered further destruction. Rebuilt almost identically in the 1920s, it will again see Rommel, at the head of his Panzer Division, fight on its outskirts in May 1940 and cross it. The painter Henri Matisse was born there and founded a museum that bears his name.

Ten rooms which, in ten stages, tell the story of the life and work of Henri Matisse. The Auguste Herbin collection is arranged in the new building, in five rooms retracing the career of the artist born in Quiévy in 1882. The Tériade room presents the donation of the famous publisher: 27 books and some 500 engravings by the greatest artists: Chagall, Léger, Rouault, Miro, Matisse, Le Corbusier ... The entrance ticket includes an audio guide for individuals , access to the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. - Town Hall and Belfry – It was built in the middle of the XVIe century, this building is a clever mix of architecture: Renaissance decor and typical aspects of the North of France such as stepped gables: the Spaniards have been there ... The Belfry was built in 1705.
- 2 Collegiate Church of Saint-Martin Rue Jean Jaurès – The only remaining building of the former Benedictine Abbey of Saint-André. This Baroque church is very interesting. It is a former Benedictine Abbey built from 1635. The onion bell tower is remarkable. The facade, in Baroque style, is superbly decorated. Inside, admire the richness of the sculptures and the proportions of the large nave. One of the most remarkable churches in the North. The variety and richness of all secular sculptures arouse admiration. The onion bell tower, built from 1680, backs onto the transept. The Saint-Martin church, the only remaining building of the former Benedictine abbey of Saint-André, was built according to the plans of Brother Jean du Blocq of the company of Jesus during two campaigns: the first, concerning the facade and the nave, dates from the years 1634-1635, while the choir and the transept are made at the turn of the XVIIe and XVIIIe centuries. The facade, the work of the Cambrésian sculptor Jaspar Marsy, is characteristic of the mannerism of the northern regions. The play of curves and counter-curves, the use of volutes, the variety of decorative motifs (ornate friezes, pots-à-feu) make it a true masterpiece. Its bulbous bell tower dates from the 1680s. The abundance of the decoration is found inside, where the sculptures of Jaspar Marsy rub shoulders in the nave and the Froment brothers in the choir. The organ gallery, from the beginning of the 18th centurye century is the work of the Cambrésian sculptor Boittaux.
