Le diamond is a city in Martinique.
background
This village is located 30 km south of Fort-de-France and consists of practically only two one-way streets. Opposite the remarkable church from the 17th century there is a small market for tourists. The 4 km long sandy beach is separated from the road by a row of palm trees. From there, fishing boats go to the 176 m high Rocher du Diamant.
The diamond rock
The almost circular island of Rocher du Diamant is 2 km off the coast. During the Napoleonic Wars, the British listed it as "His Majesty's Ship Diamant Rock" for 18 months. The rounded rock is 176 m high. It was armed with several ship guns and had a crew of 110. It is said that the French stranded some rum barrels on the island in order to recapture them on May 27, 1805. The fact is, however, that the English were shot there for three days by five French ships with a total of 148 cannons ready to be attacked. Today there are only sea birds left on the island. The fishermen can bring you to the island. Because of the very dangerous currents in the sea, swimming there is not possible!
