Le Moule (creole: Moul) is a community in Guadeloupe.
background
The first French came here in 1635, and written records have been in existence since 1698; they name the place on the east side of the Bay Portland. Only in the 18th century was a pier built on the west side, which gave the place its current name. As a result, this became the most important trading port with connections as far as France. From the Atlantic coast it is 14 km to Saint-Francois.
In the first half of the 19th century, Le Moule had 8,047 residents, 7,066 of whom were slaves. Until the abolition of slavery, the plantation owners led an extraordinarily independent life in great prosperity. In 1901 there were only four instead of 100 sugar mills and distillers: Duchassaing, Gardel, Marly and Zévallos. Today's port only has a quay of 22 m in length and a jetty of 55 m. Fire destroyed parts of the village in 1873, 1897, 1901 and 1908, and hurricanes caused damage in 1899 and 1928. The last severe storm was "Hugo" in 1989.
Two sugar factories still work there today. The Edgard Clerc Archaeological Museum is located a few kilometers outside the village, and the Bellevue rum distillery is on the D 101 road.
There is a major investment and redevelopment program for the town center at the port, the Damencourt district with the Boulevard Maritime.
beaches
- Plage de l'Autre Bord. Long, shady beach with fine, golden sand and a few beach bars. The waves can be strong, but not dangerous because there are offshore reefs. Many visitors come for picnics and camping, especially on weekends.
- Plage de la Baie du Moule. Public beach next to the road. The sea gets deep quickly and the beach is well suited for surfers.
