Lelydorp is located on the road to Paramaribo To Zanderij to Suriname. Originally called Kofi-Djompo after a slave, the locality was renamed when famous Dutch engineer Lely created a railway line there and the locality became an important stopover, at the crossroads of the railway line and the main road of the airport. The railway is no longer in use, but with some 17,000 inhabitants, mostly Javanese and Hindu, Lelydorp is the second largest city in Suriname. It is the administrative center of Wanica District and the seat of the district commissioner. The place is important as a place of supplies for people who leave the capital for the interior of the country. There are several shops and restaurants as well as a hotel. There are even a few attractions.
