Lelystad is the capital of the province Flevoland. The city emerged from 1967. It is located on the 1957 drained polder Oostelijk Flevoland. The city is named after the creator of the drainage plan for the Zuiderzee, Dr. Ir. Cornelis Lely.

Lelystad was not officially established as a city until 1980. The city is laid out as a "planned city" or "New Town" (see also corresponding Wikipedia article).
It is extremely interesting to be in such a young futuristic city, which was only created from the drawing board after land reclamation through polders on the world scene around 50 years ago. If you have previously visited Urk, Enkhuizen or Blokzijl and then in Lelystad, you think you have moved from the Middle Ages to the modern era.

- 1 Aviodrome Aviation Museum. The National Aviation Museum of the Netherlands is located at the airport about 6 km south of the city center.
