Leppävirta[1] is a municipality Northern Savonia province Eastern Finland in the county. Leppävirta, with a population of just over 10,000, is located in the middle of the most beautiful Lake Finland, only about 50 kilometers from the largest city in its county. From Kuopio southward. It is easy for both domestic and foreign tourists to come to Leppävirta to enjoy local attractions, the unique natural landscape and the North Savo lifestyle.

History

The first written information about the inhabitants of Leppävirta dates back to 1541, when there were already dozens of houses in the area. Probably the first houses were born in the area in the 15th century. In 1639, the parish of Leppävirta was established, which included two hundred houses. The development of settlement in the area was relatively slow and at the beginning of the 18th century it was estimated that there were about 4,000 inhabitants. In 1928 Theft and its surrounding areas were separated from Leppävirta into an independent trade parish. Leppävirta currently has about 10,000 inhabitants and its largest settlements are the church village, Sorsakoski and Kotalahti.

Leppävirta is located along Highway 5, well connected to the largest centers in Eastern Finland. For boaters, Leppävirta serves as an excellent stop when the Konnus canal area connects the extensive watercourses of Unnuka and Kallavesi. The nearest long-distance train stations are located in Varkaus, Kuopio and Pieksämäki.

By plane

Kuopio Airport (DATE: WHERE) is located in South Siilinjärvi, Rissala, 70 km from Leppävirta. Finnair, for example, operates regular flights to Rissala [2].

Flight From Helsinki takes about an hour. From the airport you can get to Kuopio by bus and from there on to Leppävirta. A taxi from the airport to Leppävirta is also possible and can be ordered from (017) 106 400.

By train

By bus

By road

Highway number 5 runs through Leppävirta in a north-south direction and the road network in good condition covers the entire locality.

  • Leppävirta Church

The neoclassical greystone church designed by Carl Ludvig Engel in the center of Leppävirta is one of the most famous sights in the area. The church, completed in 1846, is the seventh largest Lutheran church in Finland. The church is open every day during the summer from 11 am to 5 pm, at other times by appointment. No entrance fee.

  • Orinoro Gorge

The Orinoro gorge, about 100 m long and almost 20 m deep, is located 15 km east of the center of Leppävirta. At the bottom of the gorge is a spring and the lush vegetation consists of rare lichen species.

  • Konnus canal area

The Konnus Canal connects the Kallavesi and Unnuka watersheds. There have been a total of four different canals, the earliest of which were built as early as 1841. There are now three different locks side by side in Konnus.

  • Leppävirta bridge

The 210-meter-long bridge connecting Soisalo Island and Leppävirta Church Village was completed in August 1965. It was the highest arch bridge in Finland at that time. The bridge came to replace the old narrow wooden swing bridge across the strait. The free underpass height at the Saimaa deep waterway is a whopping 26 m. Matti Pulliainen, Kalle Pulliainen and Juho "Jussi" Voutilainen reinforced the bridge in winter.

  • Leppävirta Local History Museum

The building, which previously served as a granary, was converted for museum use in the late 1950s. The inauguration of the Local History Museum was celebrated in 1962. The museum celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012, when the museum's main exhibition was renewed. The museum's collection includes about 3,000 objects and about 7,000 photographs that present the history, livelihoods and culture of the parish from the Stone Age to the present decades. The museum is open during the summer from Tuesday to Sunday from 12 noon to 4 pm.
