Les Abymes (creole: Zabim or Zabym) is a community in Guadeloupe.
background
The administrative center of Les Abymes was founded in 1726. In the west it borders on a large mangrove and swamp area. In the south it extends to the city limits of Pointe-a-Pitre. The decline of the sugar industry led to major uprisings in 1895, 1910, 1956 and 1962. The rapid growth of the nearby city of Pointe-a-Pitre made it necessary to build modern, multi-storey houses here as well. The Dothémare residential park was built for this purpose. In the city center there is a sports center with a stadium for football clubs for 12,000 spectators, 300 m from the city administration. There is also a swimming pool and a golf school. There are five arenas in town for enthusiastic cockfight fans.
Due to the Aéroport Pôle Caraibe International Airport, located southwest of the center, only 3 km from Pointe-a-Pitre, there are several storage facilities and feeders for flight operations.
Anyone who has been to the island in the past will know the airport under the name le Raizet. Today this is the old airport and Terminal Sud, it is only used for regional flights. The airline Air Calyso is based there. The new Terminal North was put into service in 1996 as Pôle Caraibes for international flights.
The second connecting bridge over the Rivière Salée was inaugurated in 1997 to improve traffic flow.

Aéroport Pôle Caraibes International Airport, handles an average of 1.8 million passengers per year. The old terminal building can be found on the south side. Only regional traffic is handled there. A completely new terminal was built directly opposite on the north side. All flights to Europe and North America are handled there.
