Les Mathes is a municipality of Charente Maritime located in the heart of the Arvert peninsula, it is a very touristic village especially known for its seaside district of La Palmyre and for its zoo.
Understand
The village of Mathes is built on a former small island located in the former historic region of Saintonge.
In 1960, Léon Nicolle, then mayor of the town, created the tourist district of La Palmyre at the edge of the Bonne-Anse bay and in 1966, the Rochefortais Claude Caillé founded the zoo of La Palmyre.

The town is on the cycle route "La Vélodyssée", it has many cycle paths as well as bicycle rental companies such as Locacycledirect.com on Avenue de La Palmyre. At the port is a sailing club and between Les Mathes and La Palmyre is an equestrian center.
