The historical city Lincoln goes back to a foundation of the Romans. It is located on a hill in the predominantly flat, agricultural county Lincolnshire. The city is dominated by the Gothic cathedral.
background
The name Lincoln comes from the Celtic, probably derived from "Lindu" (Dark Pool) or "Lindon" (the Pool on the Hill). The oldest settlement on this site dates back to the Iron Age and was next to Brayford Pool, a large extension in the River Witham at the foot of the hill. This expansion became a major port from which ships could sail as far as The Wash and the North Sea. Two main streets from prehistoric and Roman times, Ermine Street and Foss Way, met just south of the river. At this point the Romans built a fort and the city on top of the hill. They called the city "Lindum", later "Lindum Colonia", a colony, the highest rank of a Roman city.
