Linnich and its surrounding area are located in the north of the Jülich Börde, at the transition from the Cologne Bay to the Lower Rhine lowlands. The city center of Linnich is located in the Rur valley to the left of the Rur. The associated districts are grouped around, with Körrenzig and Tetz also in the Rur valley. Even if Linnich is not located directly in the Rhenish lignite district, there are numerous effects of the nearby opencast mines in the city area.
