Little Corn Island(Spanish: Isla Pequeña del Maíz, small corn island) is an island on the atlantic sideNicaragua.
background
history
Like its larger sister island, largely spared from Spanish influence, this island became part of the British sphere of influence, which can still be seen and heard from the residents today. However, the recent tourist boom has seen an influx of Spanish-speaking immigrants from the mainland who, if they speak English, are more likely to speak standard rather than Caribbean English.

getting there
by boat
The journey takes place daily in small, relatively fast boats from Big Corn Island. Boats to and from other destinations run irregularly or not at all, so only asking on the spot helps
mobility
Little Corn Island is different from its bigger "sister island" CAR-FREE, so that you can get around the whole island essentially on foot. Most of the beaches and hotels can be easily reached even after rainfalls and the small size of the island shouldn't put any physical strain on anyone.

Other destinations and sights
activities
Little Corn Island is a paradise for divers and snorkeling and kayaking are also possible, as such equipment can be hired. You can also swim and bathe on the various beaches. In addition, some fishermen offer fishing trips including subsequent preparation of the fish. Inside the island there is a hill with a cell phone mast on it. However, the view from there is obscured by the vegetation.
to buy
There are a few smaller supermarkets and mom and pop shops on the island. Fruit and vegetables are often sold in the open air directly at the pier. However, you have to calculate a certain "island surcharge" for everything that does not come from the sea itself. It is also important to consider that there is no ATM on Little Corn Island (as of March 2014) and there are no plans to build one . You should therefore definitely take enough cash with you. However, some restaurants and also a supermarket accept credit cards. Many hotels and smaller shops, however, do not. A specialty of the island (besides lobster) is coconut bread, which some locals sell.
eat
As on the entire Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, fish and lobster are fresh and relatively cheap here too. Coconut bread (pan de coco) and gallo pinto are also popular. Due to the strong influence of tourism, there are now "international" dishes such as American pancakes.
Drink
Water and soft drinks from the Coca Cola and Pepsi brands are also available in bottles, as are beer (Victoria and To ~ na) and rum. The tap water does not meet European standards and should not be drunk. However, it is useful for cooking if it is heated sufficiently.
