Lithuania is an active member of the European Union (since 1 May 2004) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (since 29 March 2004). Lithuania is the only Baltic country with more than 800 years of tradition as a state, while its name was first mentioned a thousand years ago, in 1009. At the dividing line of Western and Eastern civilizations, Lithuania fought dramatically for its independence and survival.

For a period in the 15th century, Lithuania was the largest state in all of Europe, where crafts and international trade flourished. In 1579, the University of Vilnius, an important scientific and educational center on a European scale, was inaugurated. The Constitution of Lithuania-Poland, together with the French Constitution, both adopted in 1791, were the first constitutions written in Europe (the Lithuanian-Polish Constitution was adopted a few months earlier).

In Kaunas the hostels are priced higher than Vilnius but are still affordable. Kaunas Apartments, is a complex of renovated apartments costing around 10 to 20 euros for a double room with bathroom, depending on the season. In Vilnius prices are more affordable, good tip and Vilnius Apartments has a similar layout to from Kaunas, it costs around 10 euros a day for a double room with bathroom.
