How to orient yourself

The capital of grand duchy it is the size of an Italian provincial city and you will have no problem finding your way around. Neighborhoods

  • Center - The historic center of the city corresponds to the Upper Town (Ville Haute) which hinges on piazza Guglielmo II (Guillaume II) overlooked by the town hall. Very close to this is the Piazza d'Armi (place d'Armes), smaller. As the name suggests it was once the place where military parades took place but today it is above all a tourist place thanks to the numerous bars and restaurants that surround it. Open-air concerts are held here in the summer. Grand Rue, a street that runs in the sense of latitude, is a place for shopping.
  • Grund - Grund is the lower district just east of the historic center and separated from it by the course of the Alzette river. It is an extremely pleasant neighborhood full of friendly locals. It can be reached from the center with a lift located on rue du Saint Esprit.
  • Garer Quartier - The neighborhood around the train station, not pleasant compared to the previous two, but with moderately priced hotels
  • Kirchberg - The area north-east of the center where the headquarters of important European institutions such as the High Court of Justice are located


How to get

By plane

Luxembourg City History Museum
  • City History Museum (Musée d'Histoire de la Ville), rue du St-Esprit 14. The collections are housed in 4 restored mansions from the 17th and 19th centuries. Fort Thüngen and Museum of Modern Art
  • Fort Thüngen (Dräi Eeche Park European District - Kirchberg - Bus 125 departing from the central station). Fortress partially demolished after the 1867 Treaty of London which required the demolition of the many forts present on Luxembourgish soil. In 1990 it was completely rebuilt according to the original design
  • Museum of Modern Art (Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean) (Dräi Eeche Park - European District - Kirchberg bus 125 departing from the central station). Opened in 2006, the museum is housed in a modern building designed by the architect Ieoh Ming Pei, the same one who built the Louvre pyramid in Paris. The very eclectic collections range from photography to design and fashion.
  • Am Tunnel, 16 rue Sainte Zithe, 2763 Luxembourg (Station district), 352 40 15 24 50. Am Tunnel is a contemporary art gallery that is housed in a tunnel that was part of the city's defensive structures. Neumünster Abbey
  • Neumünster Abbey, 28 Rue Münster (On the bank of the Alzette river in the district of Grund). Benedictine abbey destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. At the time of the French Revolution it was used as a state prison. From 1997 it became the seat of the European Institute of Cultural Routes.
