Lions (ndl. Leuven, French Louvain) is a city in Flemish Brabant.

background

Leuven is the largest city in the province of Flemish Brabant and is the seat of one of the oldest universities in Central Europe - the Catholic University of Leuven. This was bilingual until 1968, until the French-speaking branch then moved to the specially built city Louvain-la-Neuve pulled.

getting there

By plane

The nearest airport is in Brussels. From there there is a train to Leuven every 20 minutes. For train tickets to and from the airport you have to pay a surcharge (diabolo surcharge, "diabolo toeslag"). This is usually included in the ticket price and only needs to be purchased separately if you have a monthly subscription, for example.

By train

There are good train connections to Brussels. Under 26-year-olds can cover any distance within Belgium with the Go Pass 1 for 6 euros. The Go Pass 1 is also valid in border traffic, then it costs 8 euros. But you can't buy it at German train stations!

By bus

In the street

From Brussels on the E40 / E314 motorway.
From Germany / Aachen either via the E40 (Liège) or via the E314 (Maastricht / Genk)

mobility

The Belgian railway NMBS has built up a good network so that it is very easy to travel from Leuven to other larger cities in Belgium. In Leuven there is a bicycle station right at the train station that both rents and repairs bicycles (Fietspunt station Leuven). The bus company De Lijn covers the Flemish part of Belgium and is therefore also active in Leuven. Tickets can be bought directly on the forecourt of the main train station. There is also the big bus station. Unfortunately, the route network is not explained in great detail. The buses run both in the city center and to areas on the outskirts and other cities.
