Métis-sur-Mer is a city in the east of Quebec.
Understand
Métis-sur-Mer is located on The Gaspé Coast in the MRC of La Mitis in the east of Quebec. Including the adjacent villages of Grand-Métis and Saint-Octave-de-Métis, the place has a population of 1 379 inhabitants for an area of 149 km2. Since 2002, includes the old village of Les Boules. Since that date, the part that formed the former municipality of Métis-sur-Mer has been known as the borough of MacNider. This borough is officially bilingual. In fact, 10% of the inhabitants of Métis-sur-Mer use theEnglish at home while the majority use French.
Métis-sur-Mer is part of the Association des plus beaux villages du Québec.
Story
In 1845, the municipality of Métis was created by breaking away from Sainte-Flavie. However, it was dissolved in 1847. In 1855, Saint-Octave-de-Métis broke away from Sainte-Flavie. The village of Petit-Métis was founded by Scottish in 1850 and it was officially created in 1897 by breaking away from Saint-Octave-de-Métis. In 1908, the municipality of Saint-Octave-de-Métis-Sud broke away from Saint-Octave-de-Métis. The latter then adopted the name of Grand-Métis. In 1921, Petit-Métis was renamed Métis-sur-Mer. In 1931, Saint-Octve-de-Métis-Sud resumed the name of Saint-Octave-de-Métis. In 2002, the village of Métis-sur-Mer changed status to that of town when it merged with the village of Les Boules which had been founded in 1952.

Includes a restaurant using edible plants growing in the gardens. They are one of the "must-see attractions of the Gaspé". It is a national historic site of Canada recognized.
