background

The city is international mainly because of that Victories of Mafikeng, the siege of the city by native Boers in the second Boer War. The defending British under Robert Baden-Powell (later founder of the Boy Scout Movement) held the city and were celebrated as heroes after the siege. Since 2010 the name of the city has been changed to Mahikeng, this means in the Tswana language the space between the rocks.
