Information about the city

Heart of the Hallertau

location

The city is located in the center of the Hallertau, the largest contiguous hop-growing area in the world, and is therefore also known as the middle center or "heart of the Hallertau".

The city lies on the river Abens.

history

The oldest part was Schleissbach on the heights of the western Abenstal, which was first mentioned in 825 as "Slegilespach". The second settlement area arose around 1220, when Count Meinhard von Rotteneck built the Mainburg fortress opposite, on the so-called Hofberg, on the eastern hill of the Abenstal valley. Finally, in Schlüsselhausen, the third center of the settlement in the river valley, there is a documentary mention of a mill that is subordinate to the duke.

Hop metropolis

At the end of the 14th century, Duke Stephan II of Bavaria-Ingolstadt granted the right to hold annual markets on St. Margaret's Day and St. Gall's Day. The markets and festivals that are known far beyond the city limits are a reminder of this. Mainburg was a market town for centuries until it was given the right to seal hops in 1847. Since then, the rise of Mainburg to the "hop metropolis" began.

Only raised to the status of town in 1954, the area of the former district town of Mainburg increased tenfold in the course of the area reforms of the 1970s through the incorporation of the formerly independent communities Ebrantshausen, Holzmannshausen, Lindkirchen, Oberempfenbach, Steinbach and Sandelzhausen.

Today Mainburg is the cultural and social center of the region.

Historic city center

The architectural center of the city is the market square with the historic town hall, the Liebfrauenkirche and the Marienbrunnen, one of the city's landmarks. The town hall, with its beautiful gable facade, the arched arcades and the bay tower, was built in 1756 after the old town hall burned down at this point. In earlier times, the building was still used for civic arrest, later a school class, shops on the ground floor, the Schranne (the grain market) and, until 1964, the hop scales.
