It was formerly a hamlet Cisna were established at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries as a place for transhipment of wood from local sawmills. The settlement is currently inhabited by approx. 100 people, located approx. 2 km to the west from Cisna, towards Komańcza.

In the 19th century, there were no roads, the area was wild and practically uninhabited. And winters with 30-degree frost were the rule. They cut these areas off from the rest of the world for six months. Therefore, running a narrow-gauge railway through these inaccessible areas was an extremely pioneering undertaking, it is difficult to imagine it even today.

The first steam locomotive entered the Maidan station in 1898. And then, for almost 100 years, it traveled the 25-kilometer route, carrying people and wood from the Bieszczady clearings. It was the transport of wood from sawmills that contributed most to its development. The line grew and there were branches to industrial plants. In the years 1902-1904 the first section was developed Bieszczady Forest Railway Majdan - Cisna - stream Smerek and several branches. Currently, the Railway runs seasonally on the following routes: Cisna - Majdan - PrzysupDolzyca - Roztoki Górne - Solinka - Żubracze and Majdan - Wola Michowa and Majdan - Balnica - Smolnik (the section from Balnica to Smolnik was reactivated in 2009).

The line was closed in 1994 for economic reasons.

It seemed to be gone forever. Fortunately, two years later the Bieszczady Forest Railway Foundation was established. It saved not only the historic rolling stock and buildings of the main station in Majdan, but most of all the spirit of Bieszczady. On July 4, 1997, a train carrying people set off for the route from Maidan to Przysłup. The almost crazy dream of a dozen enthusiasts has been realized. Today, trains pulled by an ancient steam locomotive regularly make their way up to Balnica, carrying tourists.

Worth seeing

A trip in a choo-choo train is a unique attraction, because the areas on which it moves are one of the most beautiful corners of Europe. In winter, it is possible to spot wild animals in the snow, which probably got used to the queue. They are not afraid of either the locomotive's whistle or the smoke coming out of the chimney.

If you are in the Bieszczady Mountains, you must travel by this train. This is an unforgettable attraction.

In winter, only one route is open - from Majdan to Balnica, with a focus on winter holidays, throughout February.

At the Majdan station there are small gastronomy points and a spacious car park. Admission to the station area is payable. The so-called a platform for PLN 2 (reduced PLN 1).

Rides take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Departure from Maidan at 12:00. One way journey takes approx. 45 minutes. Stop in Balnica - approx. 20 minutes. It is worth dressing warmer, especially in winter, because the train consists of open carriages, without windows and the upper part of the walls (which makes it easier to photograph). There is only 1 classic car with closed windows in the set. In the spring and summer season, the cable car also goes to the east. The final station is then Przysłup, 11 km away, and on the way the train stops in Cisna and Dołżyca. Just in case, we check the website: Kolejka.bieszczady.pl You can also buy tickets online. Tickets for journeys to Balnica cost: normal PLN 25, discounted - PLN 20. It is worth arriving an hour earlier, because in nice weather there are many people willing and there may be no tickets. But most often then an additional train pulled by a diesel locomotive is launched.

The Bieszczady Mountains are beautiful all year round. Everyone has a favorite time. Snowy and cold winter scares many people away, but thanks to this there are few random tourists, friendships are made more often. The so-called March winter, i.e. high-pressure weather with sunny days, is magical in the Bieszczady Mountains.
