getting there

By plane

The nearest airport is that of Corfu town, it can be reached in around 45 minutes by car.

By bus

There is a bus connection of the "green line" to Makrades. However, it is a branch line that is not used that often. A bus schedule is worth gold here.

In the street

If you come from Corfu town you drive in the direction of Paleokastritsa. It turns right shortly before Paleokastritsa Lakones, you have to turn here. Passing through Lakones one arrives at the next village, Makrades. Even if you come from the north, you should choose this route, because the roads through the hills of the north are often only signposted in Greek and it is quite complicated.

mobility

If you are here with your rental car, you should park it safely. The rest can be done very easily on foot as the place is not very big. As already mentioned above, the town center is particularly interesting for tourists.

activities

A shopping spree through the town, a rest in the tavern.

shop

Out of the shops, all of which sell the usual stuff that you can buy all over Corfu, one is worth mentioning. If you come into town from Paleokastritsa, it is the first shop on the right. In addition to the usual souvenirs of Corfu, there are regional products that were made in the town. You can also ask, they understand and speak German in the shop. A busy saleswoman explains everything possible. If you want to take something special home with you from Corfu, then you have a good chance of getting something here. You should also take your time, the best thing is to get advice on what has really been produced in the area around Makrades.

kitchen

In the Makrades tavern
  • 1  Colombo's tavern. Here, too, one has prepared for the passing travelers. But they offer good, simple, Greek cuisine and one or two Corfiot dishes are also on the menu. It's not cheap, but it's good and cozy. You can sit outside on the large terrace and enjoy the time. There is a nice corner in the restaurant where exhibits of olive oil extraction have been collected. They are exhibited here, it's almost like a small museum.

nightlife

accommodation

Hotel in Makrades.JPG

Between Lakones and Makrades, at the viewpoint on Paleokastritsa, there is a special hotel. Here you have to take the elevator to your room because it is built directly on the mountain.

security

As almost everywhere in Corfu, it is enough to adhere to the general behavior. No valuables in the car, etc. That is enough to get out of here unscathed. No problem.

health

Doctors and pharmacies are in Paleokastitsa in Makrades itself you have no options.

Practical advice

You don't need a Makrades plan, it's too small for that. Anyway, only the town center is interesting. Here you can just go out and explore everything. When a bus comes with tourists it gets very full very quickly. Then you should run away when you have done everything.

You have a connection to all known cell phone networks, but that's about it. You will look in vain for payphones, mailboxes or internet cafés.
