Maldives are an island nation In South Asia.
Regions
The practice of naming the Maldives requires a little getting used to. The archipelago consists of 26 atoll (word Atholhu is originally the language of the Divesh), which are not individual islands but giant reef rings up to hundreds of kilometers wide filled with small islands, according to the official bill, a total of 1190.
To keep life from being too simple, atoll formations (with complex traditional names like Maalhosmadulu Dhekunuburi) is divided into county administrative units, also called atolls, referred to by code names such as Baa. The snappy short code letters based on the Diveh alphabet are easier to remember and thus popular with foreign guests, so they are also used in Wikat trips. Only 10 of the atolls are open to tourism, and from north to south these are:
- Lhaviyani (Miladhunmadulu Uthuruburi)
- Raa (Maalhosmadulu Uthuruburi)
- Baa (Maalhosmadulu Dhekunuburi)
- Kaafu (North and South Male Atolls) - the capital Malen and around the airport and thus by far the most popular atoll for guests
- Alifu (Ari) - To the west of Kaafu and especially to divers
- Vaavu (Felidhu)
- Meemu (Mulak)
- Faafu (Nilandhe Atholhu Uthuruburi)
- Dhaalu (Nilandhe Atholhu Dhekunuburi)
- Seenu (Addu) - the southernmost of the atolls, Gan Airport is located here
The remaining atolls (for which permission is required to visit) are Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhaalu, Gnaviyani, Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Laamu, Nyavinani, Seenu, Shaviyani, and Thaa.

Understand
Come
All visitors, including Finns, will automatically receive a free 30-day visa as long as there is a return air ticket and either a hotel reservation or sufficient cash (at least US $ 50 / day). Notice that the importation of alcohol and pigmeat is prohibited, although duty-free shopping can, if necessary, be retained by customs.
By plane
The main airport in the Maldives is located Malén next to Hulhule Island. There are scheduled flights to the island, e.g. Dubaista, Colombosta (Sri Lanka) and From Singapore, but most guests arrive on charter flights directly from Europe.
To the southern tip of the Maldives on the island of Gan Addun Atoll has recently opened a new international airport, which will receive its first flights from Europe in winter 2007.
By boat
Move
There are air taxis and boats to travel between the Maldivian islands. Hotels usually handle transportation.
Visiting islands other than the capital Male and Resorts requires a pass from the Ministry of Atoll, which is not issued without an invitation from a person living on the island.
Talk
The official language of the Maldives is Divehi, however English widely understood, especially in resorts.
Buy
The currency of the Maldives is Rufiya (MRF, Rf), which is divided into a fun hundred laariin. However, many visitors never even see local money, as all hotels are priced exclusively in dollars and bills can be acknowledged with a credit card.
However, when heading to the capital island, you should change some Rufiya. At the bank, the exchange rate for the dollar is 12.75: 1, while shops and restaurants qualify your dollar for a worse exchange rate such as 12: 1 or even 10: 1.
Price level
The price level in the Maldives is expensive. Hotels cost hundreds of dollars a night at the cheapest and because almost everything you need to bring in from abroad, meals and other entertainment are expensive. Almost all services are lumped at an approximate 10% service charge, but staff are still expecting gratuity in addition to this. In addition to the price of the trip and the hotel, it is worth booking at least € 1000 per week per couple for food, drink and activities.
Eat
Guests in the Maldives usually eat all their meals in their hotels, which usually offer vague international cuisine from which all exoticism has been carefully trimmed away.
Malelta however, there are small ones hotaarestaurants serving real Maldivian food. The food is usually based on fish (mas), in particular for tuna (Kandu mas), and the manufacturing methods are closely related to South India and Sri Lanka. The portions are often fiery and seasoned with coconut, but the vegetables are rarely used. A traditional meal consists of rice, garudhiya-fish broth and a plate of lime, chili and onions. Riha-curryt, Roshibread and papadhuchips are also popular.
Its own chapter is the Maldivian fast food i.e. hedhikasnacks, almost always fish-based and deep-fried. These are available in every cup and the price is usually just a couple of Rufiya pieces.
Juo
Alcohol is banned on the local islands, including Male, but on the hotel islands liquor is freely available (though often at great prices).
